History

WISE Choices for Girls (WC4G) is a Marin County based girls group and has been providing services since 2010 in Marin City. WC4G serves risk/low income girls from ages of 12-18.

WC4G was created to support the experience of teens given the unique community living in the most diverse area in Marin County. Due to the success of the program, girls have now joined from neighboring cities. The organization has girls from Novato, Mill Valley, Corte Madera, and Marin City. Since 2010 WC4G has assisted 50 girls and families, with the intention of increasing those numbers because of our new facility, which will allow us to accommodate more girls. WC4G has a history of inspiring young women to become productive, positive, determined, educated young ladies.

WC4G achieves these goals by partnering with parents, teachers, counselors, and tutors. A key to the success of the program is collaboration with existing organizations within Marin County, such as, but not limited to; Marin City Recreation Center, Marin City Community Services District, The Hannah Project, Bridge the Gap, The Woman’s Commission Teen Girls, Marin County Youth Leadership Institute, and Marin Youth Commission, the Marin City CX3 Healthy Living program, the Sausalito Rotary Club, and all 5 high schools in Marin County.

Our young women were recognized by Marin County Supervisors office/Marin City Services District for outstanding community service in 2012. WC4G has served by volunteering with young children at the Manzanita Child Care Development/ Marin City Recreation Center, Marin Luther King middle school, Willow Creek Academy, and with Marin City Youth Council. The organization has also served the local seniors citizens, and the needy, by assisting with feeding the homeless and stuffing back packs. Partner agencies with these projects include Warm Wishes Helping Hands Project as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas season programs. WC4G also has a series or session introducing Healthy Wise Food Choices, prepared and distributed by The Wise Girls for community members of all ages.

It is MANDATORY for Wise Girls to partake in tutoring programs. They become proactive young leaders. The “WISE Girls” make Wise Choices! 80% of WC4G participants have gone onto four year Universities around the country, 10% are active military service women, and 10% are full time employees. WC4G felt the need to develop a continuation of services, and created WISE Ladies Ages 18-26, and Wise Women, an empowerment group initially for our girl’s mothers.

"Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another." -Nelson Mandela
